Trailer Tires

The right tire, the right load range, and a straight answer on when to replace it.

Getting the right tire matters more than most people think.

We stock trailer tires for everything on our lot, and we mount and balance customer supplied tires too. The wrong one is often the reason for a blowout on a hot day with a full load.

ST tires, not car tires

Trailer tires are marked ST for Special Trailer. They have stiffer sidewalls built to handle the side loads a trailer sees, not to give a smooth ride. A passenger or light truck tire in the same size will squirm under load and is not rated for the job. If your trailer's data plate calls for something else we will match it, but almost every trailer on the road should be riding on ST tires.

Sizing and safety

Load range and age both matter

Load range matters as much as size

  • The load range letter on the sidewall sets how much weight the tire can carry and how much air it needs
  • Load Range C carries roughly 1,800 to 2,000 pounds per tire at about 50 psi
  • Load Range D carries roughly 2,500 pounds per tire at about 65 psi
  • Load Range E carries 3,000 pounds or more per tire at about 80 psi
  • We match tires to your trailer's GVWR, not just the size stamped on the old tire, since an undersized replacement is a slow way to invite trouble

Age matters more than tread

  • A trailer tire usually ages out before the tread wears down
  • It sits in the sun in one spot between trips and dry rots from the inside
  • We check the DOT date code on every tire we sell and every tire we inspect
  • We will tell you plainly when a tire is past its useful life, even if the tread still looks fine
